Barry Clohessy

In 2012 I entered the world of student representation when I became the class rep in my first year of college, later becoming a part time officer on the SU executive. In 2015 I was elected to my first full time role as Vice President for Welfare holding this position for two years and later being elected as President of the Institute of Technology Sligo Students’ Union. Those years weren’t enough and in 2018 I was elected to the Officer Board of the Union of Students in Ireland as Vice President for the Border, Midlands and West. I think it’s fair to say I am passionate about student representation and higher education.

Once I left the student movement I spent some time working in the corporate world as a learning and development event manager and later moving on to membership and events in the Green Party of Ireland HQ. I have also worked as a further and higher education quality assurance reviewer with Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and Dundalk Institute of Technology.

But my love for all things students’ unions drew me back and I am now currently the Head of Leadership and Student Engagement in Dublin City University Office of Student Life. What students’ unions can achieve within their institutions and society is amazing and I’m delighted to be supporting a team of sabbatical officers who are driving change.

I am delighted to join the Coole Insight team to support a border cohort of student officers and share the knowledge and skills I’ve developed while in the student movement and beyond.
