Chiko Bwalya

Associate

I started my journey in the student movement as a 2nd year student at Bournemouth University, initially as a unit rep and Black students' campaign officer. Being a part time officer made me realise that union's are an essential element of the student experience. I saw the impact I could have and the people I could support. With an amazing team (and Coole insight) I became the first Black female Education officer and held that position for 2 years. This period easily represents the best part of my university experience. It opened so many doors for me and helped me find my passion for EDI. I was able to run campaigns and speak at conferences addressing the current issues universities are facing when trying to promote themselves as inclusive spaces, as well as working with staff to maintain inclusion-focused practice

I'm currently Senior Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Officer in a women's charity. Whilst I might be working in a different sector, I still utilise every lesson I learned from my time as an officer.

I know first hand how valuable real support and guidance is. I’m so excited to be contributing to EDI support for officers that are on this amazing journey of being a student officer.
